During my university days, I was once in a classroom with my course mates, waiting for a lecture. Nearby, a few students started a conversation, and although I’m naturally a quiet person and often prefer to listen, I felt compelled to contribute this time.
One of the students, a new entrant through direct entry, began asking some thoughtful questions. I responded with answers and shared a few words of encouragement. The moment passed, and I didn’t think much of it.
A year later, this same student expressed her gratitude and revealed that at the time of our conversation, she had been facing serious personal challenges and had been on the verge of quitting school. My words, she said, gave her the hope she needed to stay. Today, she’s a proud graduate.
Over the years, I’ve had similar moments where people have shared how my words or actions positively impacted their lives, helping them find strength or a new perspective. Each time, I’m reminded of God’s grace in using me, even as I remain a work in progress.
This experience brings to mind the scripture:
“Your speech should always be pleasant and interesting, and you should know how to give the right answer to everyone.” – Colossians 4:6 (GNT)
It’s a reminder of the power of our words. What we say, even casually, can leave a lasting impact—whether to build someone up or tear them down. While we can apologize for harmful words, they cannot be unsaid. The tongue holds immense power to bless or harm. So, in every interaction—whether in conversation, in jokes, or in passing remarks—let us ensure our words are kind, thoughtful, and seasoned with grace.
